Fukumoto Fuku
BiographyFukumoto Fuku was born in 1973 in Kyoto, Japan. In 1997, she graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts, followed by a master’s degree in the same University two years later.Growing up in Kyoto, Fukumoto’s work presents itself in a clear balance between the utilitarian shapes of traditional Japanese ceramic and the strong influence of modern currents.Working mainly with porcelain and exploring its less common properties, by joining different fragments to a main vessel and glazing them with a green or blue coloured oxide paint Fukumoto’s works gain unique shapes, playing with balance and tension, creating the illusion of function while remaining an aesthetic object. Despite being young, Fukumoto has been receiving awards since 2001, when she won the Grand Prize for the Asahi Modern Craft Exhibition in Osaka, Japan. Since then, her work has been exhibited all around the world, and her permanent collection can be found in The Museum of Kyoto; INAX Tile Museum, Aichi, Japan; Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Kansas, USA; The Harn Museum of Art, Florida, USA; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
